Stuff from Karen

The past few nights I have had trouble falling asleep. My diagnosis...to many things on my mind. I had a professor in school, whom I believe still reads this blog, who used to talk about how therapeutic writing was for him, so I thought I would give it a try...

Grad School: At the beginning of July I discovered that UNT never received my application, so they allowed me to resubmit everything via email. I got confirmation that everything was received the second time, and now I am in the waiting game. I took the GRE...didn't do as well as I hoped, but did as well as I deserved. I didn't make the suggested scores, but I am hoping my good academics and killer activities during school will show just how good at this stuff I really am. I hate waiting, though. There is nothing worse then pondering just what I will do next fall if for some reason I am not accepted. I can certainty work more, but I am not allowed to put in more then 40 hours a week. So what happens at that point..do I take up a hobby? Try to take the GRE again and get in next year? I am really uncomfortable with the idea of my perfect plan not working out, and while I have prayed for the Lord's Will to be done in all of this....I really am going to be disappointed if I am not accepted. But, I have to remind myself that I have done the best I can do, and I just have to be willing to accept the outcome.

Job: I am so excited about diving into this job. Official training is Aug 14, but I have a few things on my own before then. This next week I will be doing some independent study to prepare for training, and the first week of August I will actually be leading an inservice all by myself! I think this a job that I will truly enjoy. I have always been interested in the education game, and now being married to an educator, it has become a part of my life. Hopefully I can excel in this new adventure.

Books: I have finished all six Harry Potter series, and I absolutely loved them. My theory...Dumbledore isn't dead, and Snape is really a Death Eater. I will be so sad if that latter part is true, as I really want him to be good. Harry is going to kick some booty in the seventh book, and Dave said I could read it first when it comes out. Now, I have moved on to Sense and Sensibility, and next on my list is the Narnia series. I am really excited to read some of these classics.

Weight Watchers: After four months of relaxed eating, my sweet husband and I have suffered slightly in our waistline area. We officially started Weight Watchers last week, and we are off to an amazing start. I have picked out some great recipes to cook this week, and we are having fun being creative together.

Pilates: This is my new obsession. During our very long road trip, I read an amazing article about the benefit of core muscle strength, and have decided to make this my new fitness goal. I checked out a great DVD workout at the library, and so far I am loving how strong I feel afterwards. Maybe by the next time all you see me I'll have a brand new shape!

So that's about all that is new with me...maybe now I can sleep better tonight.

Thank God Almighty...home at last!

Yesterday Dave and I returned from our 4 state, 1,500 mile road trip that included two weddings, 4 cities, and a trip to the inlaws house. We had a wonderful time, but in the hustle and go of trying to leave we forgot our camera. So instead of fun pictures to tell you about the trip...well, you're just going to have to do some old fashioned reading....

On June 29 we took off for Abilene, TX. I was in my 8th wedding since I entered college there for a sorority sister of mine. I had a great time and got to see tons of old friends. It was like a reunion. Plus, I really can wear this bridesmaids dress again. On July 3, we took off for Walnut Ridge, Arkansas to visit Dave's parents. Leaving at 5:30 in the morning put us in town just after lunch. Mary and Walter live on campus in "college city", home to many of the other faculty and staff. Walter teaches at Williams Baptist College, and the campus is on old military grounds, so there is still military housing standing. The college lets the teachers and staff members live there if they chose, and it is such a neat little community. Mary and Walter have about a 7 minute walk commute to work everyday. I love visiting there because of the slow paced life and the relaxed atmosphere. Upon our arrival there, Walter cooked us an amazing dinner in his Dutch Ovens. Porkchops, veggies and salad, plus homemade blackberry cobbler. It was fantastic. On July 4 we went to Jonesboro to visit family and had a huge brisket lunch. Afterwards, we did a little shopping in the mall ( I still had some bday money burning a hole in my pocket). Other fun activities while we were in Arkansas included picking wild blackberries that grew on campus, spending an afternoon picnicking, swimming and tubing down the rapids at the Spring River in Hardy, Arkansas, and eating at a restaurant that was made out of an old Southwest Jet plane. We also had some great time to spend visiting with the inlaws and eating Mary's wonderful cooking. On Friday, Dave and I left early again for Kansas City, MO for the rehearsal dinner of a wedding Dave would be in that Saturday. Mary and Walter drove up later that afternoon to attend the wedding as guests. On Saturday morning, the four of us went to the Kansas City Farmers Market. It was so wonderful! I have been to the famous Pikes Market in Seattle before, and this just as fun. I love seeing all the fresh fruits and veggies, flowers with buds as big as your head, and of course all the odds and ends you find. Dave and I bought some fresh bread and pastries from a baker, some gourmet flavored pasta, some pistachio nuts, and homemade salsa made right before our eyes. It was so much fun. The wedding was that night, and Dave looked just as dashing as ever in his tuxedo. On Sunday we left KC and drove to Fayetville, AR with the inlaws to do some sightseeing there. We hiked Devils Den on Monday afternoon. Devils Den is a beautiful state park with all kinds of caves and rock formations. Walter and Mary took some beautiful pictures which I will get from them and post too. It was breathtaking. Tuesday morning we made our drive home, and have been enjoying a little rest and recuperation from our vacation (hahaha). All in all, we had a wonderful time and have been truly blessed by Walter and Mary. They are great parents to us both, and we can't wait for our next visit.
