Help from the blogger world please

I need a hobby. Quickly.

But here is the problem...all the hobbies I can think of have two problems.

1. Money....Dave's hobby cost money, but not a fortune, so I can spend a little, but not a ton of money. Most hobbies out there these days cost more money then I can spend.

2. Hobbies require patience....something I don' t have when it comes to creating or making things. I am an instant gratification person. If I am working on something artistic, I want it done as quick as possible so I can enjoy it with a glass of iced tea! I don't like waiting, shopping around, or having to spend countless hours planning the execution of the hobby I enjoy. Like scrapbooking....would be totally fun, but I am so inpatient that I cant sit still long enough to cut straight lines, or measure for that fact.

Also...my hobby has to have a purpose. For example...I love to cook, but I can't sit around all day cooking....it would all go to waste. I love to sing and thought about taking voice lessons again, but for what point? So I can sound good singing in my car? That's a waste of money. I love to take pictures, but what would I do with them all? There needs to be a point to my hobby.

So far all I have come up with is sewing. I really desire to learn to sew, but dropping a few hundred on a machine right now isn't an option. Sewing has a high initial cost, but fabric and thread is fairly priced if you aren't too fancy, and I could handle that. It's the initial cost that is bad right now. Sewing does require some patience and planning, but not enough that would drive me crazy I think. Sewing definitely had a purpose! I could make so many cute things for the house if I learned to sew. But again...the initial cost is a little much right now. I could get a cheapy machine at Wal-Mart....but if I am gonna learn an art like sewing, I want a good machine that will last and has lots of good features.

So, fellow bloggers, I welcome ideas and suggestions. What hobbies do you have that you enjoy? I want to have one narrowed down by my birthday at the end of the month so I can use some of my birthday cash (hint hint) to buy things for my new found hobby.

Sewing is a really handy hobby. I don't sew all the time, but when I do, it saves me money!

Actually, I'm going to be sewing some things pretty soon. If you want to come over and learn the basics before you make the plunge for a machine, I'll teach you!

Other possible hobbies: learn a language, join the Y and take fun classes, volunteer at somewhere you enjoy....

Ooh, one thing that I've thought would be a good hobby is furniture restoration. I really enjoyed doing my table, and it only took one evening! Other things will take more time, and I'm not sure what you would do with them when they're done....

Furniture restoration is a great idea. I do a little of that myself. And you can see a tangible change everytime you do things. I'd start going to garage sales and finding old chairs, tables and dressers. It's pretty cheap and super fun.
I also thought about knitting! Cheap and useful. You can make tons of stuff knitting.
Also, I'm sorry you feel blue too. Hopefully, today we'll be better. Thinking of you my friend. Good luck with the hobby!

My machine wasn't too expensive, under $200, and it was rated one of the highest in consumer reports. It's a kenmore. I bought it at Sears. And I agree, sewing is great fun, you get an end result, but it does take patience (ask my mom, she's a sewing drop-out). But fun! New hobbies. I have too many to keep up with. Why don't you buy a hot glue gun and start making wreaths? That's artsy. And it something you can finish in an afternoon and then look how pretty it is while enjoying your ice tea.=)
Love you

OH and knitting is a good idea too.
I enjoy knitting while watching tv or a movie.

Hey! I haven't looked at your blog in ages - but I just happened to - and saw your question.

I agree with SEWING! I took a sewing class about a year after Jeff & I got married. It was fun. I wished I had continued, but sewing machines aren't that expensive really (I saw a basic one for about $70 on sale).
I know of a new place in Arlington that does lessons. I took my class at a place in Grapevine that closed. :( But what I learned has been SO HELPFUL in just basic things, and I have no doubt that called upon to do so - I could still make a skirt, pants or .... pillowcase. :)

Well, I agree with your other fine commenters here that sewing is a great fun thing to take up and you can get an excellent machine for under $100. The Brother brand machine Mike got me on Amazon was around $80 I think and so far is proving very reliable. If you just love sewing and really want to progress with it in the future you could always upgrade, and if you find that sewing really isn't your thing, you would at least have a machine to do very basic tasks like hemming on. Also, sewing is really coming back in vogue and there are so many great books and fabrics and stuff out there. Also, we could sew together and talk about it which would be great sisterly fun. ;)

I like Lydia's suggestions, too, though. Classes at the Y or furniture restoration or volunteer work would be neat. What about pottery?

I bought some knitting needles and a big ball of the cheapest yarn I could find at Michael's a couple of weeks ago and aspire to learn to knit like Lori. I've been using the really helpful videos at KnittingHelp.com.

Oh and if you'd ever like to learn how to cross stitch I could send you some supplies to get started. Depending on the chart you choose, it really doesn't take a lot of patience at all and you can do it in front of the TV with a fun movie.

Happy Hobby Adventures!!

Kudos to everything said thus far. Also consider photography. You already have a camera, you just need to go out and take some photos and post them on your blog for us. :) Presently I enjoy going to the YMCA, volunteering at the zoo, cross stitching and photography!

Stalking isn't terribly expensive, unless you go for really posh night-vision goggles.
